| What are the differences between the different English translations: Shakir (English), Yusufali (English), Pickthal (English) and Al-Hilali (English)? |
|
Shakir, Yusufali, Pickthal and Al-Hilali are the names of the different translators whose translations of The Quran are considered reliable.
Their versions differ according to their interpretation of the original Arabic text. The Quran was written in classical Arabic. Many words
have a variety of potential meanings depending upon the context; therefore, translation is dependent upon the translator's research of the intended meaning.
Translators rely on a variety of authoritative Islamic scholarly commentaries in order to select the best English substitute. If you read The Quran via TheQuran.com
you have the advantage of selecting all of the translations to easily view them side by side. You will find that they are in agreement on most of the wording; however,
Shakir and Yusufali seem to be more concise while Pickthal tends to offer his readers more explanation. Al-Hilal supplies his readers with the most extensive
commentary even preserving some Arabic phrases alongside explanations of their meaning.
